Training for housemaids

The Department of Non-Resident Keralites' Affairs (NoRKA) and the SCMS Institute of Paramedical and Development Studies, Kalamassery, have joined hands to provide training to prospective housemaids who plan to go abroad, especially to the Gulf countries.

The training that began early this month at the SCMS Institute is the first of its kind and aims to equip women with necessary skills for their employment. Women in the age group of 35 and 45 and who have studied up to SSLC from across the State will be given the training.

The training programme is jointly funded by NoRKA and the Kudumbashree poverty eradication mission. In the future, the certificates issued by the Institute after the course would be necessary for women to be given emigration clearance for working abroad as housemaids, said M. A. Aboobacker, the Central Region Coordinator for Kudumbashree mission. The training is fully residential and lasts over a fortnight during which women are given training in acquiring functional language skills like in Arabic, Hindi and English. They will be taught how to operate normal household equipment as well as given tips on the cultural practices.

They will also be given personality development training, stress management and yoga.
