NGO to market Nagpur airport project

A few days after the union cabinet decided to upgrade the Ambedkar International Airport here to an aviation hub, a city-based NGO has unfolded a plan to promote the project.

The Maharashtra Airport Development Co (MADC) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) will jointly develop the Multi-modal International Hub Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN).

The Vidarbha Economic Development (VED) Council, the NGO that fought a legal battle for the expeditious transfer of the airport to the state-owned company, would hold a MIHAN expo here in partnership with global business consultants Deloitte Touch Tohmatsu in November, VED president Vilas Kale told IANS.

Though VED is not directly involved in implementing the project, it has received several inquiries and proposals from investors and business consultancy firms abroad because it has been working closely with MADC.

'Many overseas industrial business firms have shown interest to set up their units in the MIHAN special economic zone (SEZ). We hope to convert that interest into investment,' Kale said.

An Australian firm interested in setting up agro-processing business, a Dubai-based consortium keen to start a logistics hub and an Israeli firm wanting to set up an edible oil extraction unit are among the parties that have approached VED.

The US aviation major Boeing's maintenance, repair and overhaul division has also expressed its wishes to invest in the MIHAN project.

VED had played a major role in persuading Boeing, whose vice-president Dinesh Keskar is an engineering graduate from the city, to set up its unit in Nagpur.

'Investment to the tune of Rs.200 billion ($5 billion) is expected to come in the MIHAN SEZ in the next two years and thousands of jobs will be created,' Kale said.

A delegation from Singapore Chamber of Commerce is likely to visit Nagpur before the VED-MADC expo in which Deloitte, having offices in 175 countries including India, will be the knowledge partner, he added.
