Intl schools in India ofering novelty sports

MOVE over cricket, soccer and even tennis, future executives of World Inc are learning the right strokes of business in India. Children of expats enrolled in international schools across India are taking to novelty sports including horse riding, golf, snooker, mountaineering and squash in schools so that they can fight out their deals with their counterparts in future — of course, with unmatched finesse.

In Bangalore, the Jain International School Residential School has upgraded its infrastructure to offer golf, billiards, snooker, pool, a bowling alley and even horse riding to its students. The executive director of the school Ajay Jha told ET that with the world shrinking and businesses breaking boundaries, it is imperative for every youngster to learn the ropes early in life. “Apart from instilling confidence and sportsmanship in children, these ‘niche’ games will ensure that the future entrepreneurs and executives learn how to handle success and failures with grace,” he added.

Realising the potential of games that matter to the corporate world, Bangalore-based Ebenezer International School is contemplating to introduce horse-riding and golf. “These foreign nationals are here in international schools so that they do not miss out on the kind of skills that they would have automatically gained in their countries. This generation needs to be groomed the right way so that they can take on their responsibilities as corporate gurus in future. If golf teaches one how to be focused and poised, horse riding teaches you grace - qualities that would be required of these children when they begin climbing the corporate ladder,” says the principal and founder chairman of the school Dr Abrahan Ebenezer.

In Ooty, the Hebron School has been taking its students to the Ooty Golf Course annually during February-March “to broaden their experience and give them an opportunity to learn the game the world inc. plays”, says the school’s physical instructor, Joel Erkkila.

The Good Shepherd International School in Tamil Nadu with its squash courts, mountaineering and equestrian facility has been a big draw for those expats seeking that their children take up challenges with zeal.

The school has as many as 30 horses to enable students take to adventure sports. We also have been taking students for mountaineering expeditions across Ooty to enable them to take decisions while taking the untraded paths. They must learn the ropes of in the early phase of life, explains head of the department (physical education), KV Murleedharan.
